A complex trauma survivor sent me a tweet, on Twitter. She was feeling suicidal, due to some very harmful, inappropriate and hurtful advice from someone else. I understand how these issues, can push you over the edge, when already really low.
Apparently, this person with the ‘advice’ knows about PTSD. Well, PTSD and Complex PTSD are two very different disorders. They also can be due to very different trauma. And in my experience, few people actually understand complex trauma and it’s consequences. Even many counsellors and mental health professionals, use my work, to help them understand more.
You cannot compare a short lived trauma in adulthood, with complex trauma in childhood. They are very different, have very different affects on the survivor. As per trauma experts.
But, a lot of people don’t know this. Or don’t want to know this. Too many people choose to generalise all trauma as equal, and assume PTSD and Complex PTSD are the same. They aren’t.
I understand how the hurtful words from others, often shame complex trauma survivors. Words such as ‘stop feeling sorry for yourself’. Such un-empathic words. And serve no other purpose than to shame people. Continue reading
