I received an email today, stating that my name features high on internet searches for ‘Complex PTSD expert’. I often receive requests for ‘expert advice’ and this concerns me.
I need to make this really clear…. I am not an expert, I am not a mental health professional, I am not a trauma therapist and I am not trained to give individual advice.
I am insightful into complex trauma and complex PTSD. I have extensively researched about these and this research has been with all the trauma experts in the field.
I do have considerable insight into my complex trauma journey and there are many issues and symptoms I face, that many other survivors relate to and my insight resonates with many.
But, this does not make me an expert, or someone who knows everything about complex trauma. And I never suggest I do know all there is to know.
I make it very clear that journeys cannot be compared, as they are all so different. I have endured many forms of abuse and trauma to a severe level, however, there are areas of trauma I have not personally experienced.
Frankly, anyone calling themselves a complex trauma expert, that is not highly educated and trained within this specialised area of trauma, needs to be avoided.
There are far too many people out there, wrongly and dangerously believing they can offer advice and in fact, there are even many mental health professionals, who are not sufficiently trained and educated in complex trauma.
I do understand many people relate to what I write and share, and with this blog being at over 1.4 million views, I do see the insight I bring to the conversation about Complex Trauma and Complex PTSD – are valuable.
But, I do not want anyone to assume that makes me an expert. The only expertise I have, is in my own journey.
I realised a few years ago, that I cannot and should not give individual advice, and no-one should be giving advice via the internet and social media. No decent mental health professional would give advice via the internet on individual persona’s issues.
My only advice I offer is to seek therapy with someone educated and trained sufficiently. And I have written a blog post on questions to consider asking, to help with that process.
I do know many do not have access to adequate therapy, and for those doing this journey alone, without professional help, I hope the info on my website helps in some way.
I do offer general advice about self care, self boundaries, self esteem, and ways to manage symptoms, that is the same advice offered by professionals.
My Website was set up – to collate all the information I had to search for throughout many different sites, into one site – to make it easier for people to find quality information about complex trauma. I wanted to make the process of finding relevant and quality info easier and less confusing. And this is why many mental health professionals do support my website. The info is quality.
My Website is @ https://www.healingfromcomplextraumaandptsd.com/
My website and info via my social media platforms, is not meant to be professional advice for individual circumstances. And it states this on my Website.
My website does not contain every piece of information every person will need. But, it contains a considerable amount of information, that helps many.
It is helpful for people to know – I am a complex trauma survivor – who is still in my healing journey. I share my journey to help others know they are not alone, they are not crazy and I understand how life impacting this can be.
I make no assumptions as to what every person needs. I make no assumptions as to what therapy types each person requires. I make no judgments about length of healing journey, or make judgments about how someone should heal. And anyone with insight, will know this is necessary when dealing with very complex mental health issues.
I stay away from those who claim to know what every complex trauma survivors needs, as this indicates to me they have little insight or understanding of how different each journey can be.
My empathy knows, my journey is not the same for all, and I make that very clear.
It is in every person’s interests, that I make all this very clear.
I care so deeply for all complex trauma survivors, and I would never want to give inappropriate advice, that could worsen someone’s situation.
Much love to all,
Lilly Hope Lucario
